Congratulations to the 2014 winners, the 4-H Dirt Devils – who captured their 6th consecutive Land Judging Contest title.

The Maui County Soil and Water Conservation Districts is a proud sponsor of the annual Land Judging Contest, which is the culmination of the Conservation Awareness Program. The contest is a partnership between the SWCDs, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service and the University of Hawai`i Cooperative Extension Service;

Started 65 years ago by Bunke Kumabe, who helped form the Olinda-Kula Soil & Water Conservation District, the Land Judging Contest encourages students use their knowledge about the physical features of soil, factors affecting land use and classification to evaluate three sites. The contest not only provides students with a fun way to learn about local soil and water resources, but it also teaches them how to recognize resource concerns and how to address them with conservation practices.
